Is Varicose Vein Treatment Painful?

Quick answer: Most people find modern varicose vein treatment very tolerable. At LEDAS, EVLT and sclerotherapy are done under local anesthesia, so you mainly feel a few needle pricks, pressure or warmth. Afterwards, a pulling or tight feeling along the treated vein for 1–2 weeks is common and usually eases with walking.

Key facts at a glance

  • Anesthesia: local only, with no general, spinal anesthesia or sedation.
  • During EVLT: needle pricks for the numbing medicine; then mostly pressure.
  • During sclerotherapy: small injections, each lasting a few moments.
  • After EVLT: pulling pain is possible for 1–2 weeks.
  • After injections: treated veins may feel firm or look darker while healing.
  • Best pain relief: gentle walking and ankle exercises.

Why is modern vein treatment less painful than older surgery?

For many years the standard treatment was vein stripping: cuts were made in the groin and leg, and the vein was pulled out under general or spinal anesthesia. Patients often had incision pain, bruising and a long recovery.

Modern methods work from inside the vein instead. EVLT uses a laser fibre as thin as a hair, inserted through a needle, to seal the leaking vein. Sclerotherapy uses a fine needle to inject medicine that closes smaller veins. There are no incisions to heal, so pain is generally much lower. Read laser vs stripping surgery for a fuller comparison.

What will I feel during EVLT?

  1. Ultrasound check: painless; you feel only the cool gel and the probe.
  2. Numbing: the doctor injects local anesthetic along the vein. You feel several needle pricks and a stinging or pressure sensation for a short time. This is usually the most noticeable part.
  3. Laser: once the area is numb, most people feel pressure, slight warmth, or nothing at all.
  4. Finishing: a dressing and compression stockings are put on, and you get up and walk.

LEDAS uses a 1940nm diode laser. This wavelength is strongly absorbed by water in the vein wall, which helps limit heat spreading to surrounding tissue. You are awake throughout and can tell the doctor at any time if something feels uncomfortable.

What will I feel during sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy uses very fine needles. Most people feel a quick prick, and sometimes a brief cramp or sting as the medicine goes in. Each injection takes only moments. With duplex-guided sclerotherapy , the doctor uses ultrasound to guide the needle to hidden veins, which helps make injections accurate.

How much does it hurt afterwards?

After EVLT

A pulling or tight feeling along the inner thigh or calf, similar to a stretched muscle, is common for 1–2 weeks. Some bruising may appear. This is part of the treated vein healing and being absorbed.

After injections

Treated veins can feel like firm cords and may darken for a while. This is a normal stage of healing. Some people briefly notice chest heaviness or a dry cough after foam injection; tell the nurse if this happens.

What helps

  • Walk lightly every day for 2–4 weeks.
  • Do gentle ankle pumps when sitting.
  • Wear compression stockings as advised.
  • Ask the doctor which pain relief is suitable for you.

When is pain not normal?

Contact the clinic if pain gets steadily worse instead of better, or if you see spreading redness or fever. Call emergency services for sudden chest pain, breathlessness, or a calf that becomes very swollen, hot and painful, as these can signal a blood clot. Read more on side effects and risks .

I'm nervous about needles. What can I do?

Tell the team before you start. Staff can explain each step before it happens, and you can watch the ultrasound screen or look away. Because LEDAS uses local anesthesia only, you stay in control and can ask for a pause.

What you may feel, step by step

Stage Typical sensation How long
Ultrasound exam Cool gel, light probe pressure About 15–20 minutes
Local anesthetic injections Several needle pricks, brief sting A short time
Laser (EVLT) Pressure or mild warmth Short procedure
Sclerotherapy injections Quick prick, possible brief cramp A few minutes
First weeks after EVLT Pulling or tightness, some bruising Commonly 1–2 weeks
After sclerotherapy Firm, darker veins while healing Gradually fades

Treatment pain – frequently asked questions

  • Which part of EVLT is most uncomfortable?

For most people, the injections of local anesthetic along the vein are the most noticeable part. They cause brief stinging and pressure. Once the area is numb, the laser itself usually feels like pressure or mild warmth. You can ask the doctor to pause at any time.

  • Is laser treatment less painful than vein stripping?

Generally yes. Stripping needs incisions and general or spinal anesthesia, and recovery often involves incision pain. EVLT works through a needle puncture under local anesthesia, with no incision to heal. See why LEDAS moved away from stripping.

  • Will I need strong painkillers after treatment?

Most patients manage with walking, compression stockings and, if needed, simple pain relief that the doctor approves. Ask before taking any medicine, especially if you use blood thinners. Contact the clinic if pain keeps increasing rather than easing.

  • Does pain mean the treatment didn't work?

No. A pulling or tight feeling after EVLT is a common sign that the treated vein is healing and being absorbed. Firm, darker veins after sclerotherapy are also normal. Your follow-up ultrasound confirms whether the vein has closed. Read results: what to expect.
