Varicose Vein Treatment Results: What to Expect
Quick answer: After varicose vein treatment, symptoms such as heaviness, aching and evening swelling often improve first, sometimes within weeks. Bulging veins shrink and fade more gradually over several months as the body absorbs the closed veins. Some smaller veins may need extra sclerotherapy, and regular follow-up helps maintain results over the long term.
Key facts at a glance
- Two kinds of results: how your legs feel (symptoms) and how they look (visible veins).
- Symptoms: often improve early, once the reflux has been closed.
- Appearance: improves gradually over months as closed veins are absorbed.
- Combined approach: LEDAS uses EVLT + duplex-guided sclerotherapy + sclerotherapy to treat large and small veins.
- Extra sessions: sometimes needed for remaining surface veins.
- Maintaining results: follow-up ultrasound every 1–2 years.
- No guarantees: varicose veins are a chronic disease; new veins can develop over time.
What results can I realistically expect?
Good treatment aims to do two things: remove the abnormal backflow (reflux) that causes symptoms, and reduce the visible veins. These improve on different timelines, and it helps to know that in advance so you are not disappointed in the first weeks.
It is also important to know what treatment cannot do. Varicose veins are a chronic, progressive condition. Treatment closes the veins that are faulty now, but your tendency to develop new reflux remains. That is why LEDAS pairs treatment with long-term monitoring rather than promising a one-time cure.
How soon will my legs feel better?
Many people notice that heaviness, aching, night cramps and evening swelling ease within the first few weeks, once the leaking vein is closed and pressure in the leg falls. During the first one to two weeks you may still feel a pulling sensation along the treated vein, which is part of healing. See the recovery timeline for details.
If your symptoms were caused by something other than venous reflux, such as joint or nerve problems, vein treatment will not resolve them. A careful duplex ultrasound examination before treatment helps make sure the right problem is being treated.
When will the visible veins disappear?
Large bulging veins
After EVLT closes the main trunk, the bulging branches it was feeding usually become softer and less prominent. If they are also injected with duplex-guided sclerotherapy , they first feel firm and look darker, then gradually shrink and fade over several months.
Spider and reticular veins
Fine surface veins treated with sclerotherapy start to fade over weeks to months. More than one session is sometimes needed.
Skin changes
If you already have skin darkening or hardening from long-standing disease, treatment can stop it worsening and may allow some improvement, but established pigmentation may not disappear completely. See skin darkening and lipodermatosclerosis .
What affects how good my results are?
- Completeness of diagnosis. If leaking veins are missed, symptoms and bulges can persist or return.
- Choosing the right method for each vein. Straight trunks suit laser; twisted branches and perforators suit ultrasound-guided injections.
- Stage of disease. Earlier stages usually respond more completely than advanced skin changes or ulcers.
- Aftercare. Walking and wearing compression as advised help veins close and be absorbed.
- Follow-up. Catching new reflux early keeps the result stable.
Will I need more than one treatment?
Some people need only one treatment day. Others benefit from a second stage, typically sclerotherapy of smaller vessels after the main veins have been closed and re-examined. LEDAS's program is designed this way on purpose: initial treatment of the source veins, then intensive treatment of the small vessels, then long-term monitoring.
How do I keep my results?
Stay active, avoid long periods of standing or sitting still, manage your weight, limit prolonged heat, and attend follow-up scans every one to two years, or whenever you return to Korea if you live abroad. Learn more in the relapse prevention program .
Typical timeline of results
| Time after treatment | How legs often feel | How legs often look |
|---|---|---|
| First 2 weeks | Pulling sensation; heaviness may already ease | Bruising; injected veins firm and dark |
| 1 month | Symptoms often clearly improved | Bruising gone; veins starting to soften |
| 3 months | Comfortable for most people | Bulging veins noticeably smaller |
| 6 months+ | Stable | Remaining surface veins assessed for sclerotherapy |
| Every 1–2 years | Ultrasound check | New reflux treated early if found |
Treatment results – frequently asked questions
Why do my veins look worse right after treatment?
In the first weeks, bruising and the darkening of injected veins can make legs look worse before they look better. This is part of normal healing as closed veins fill with trapped blood and are gradually absorbed. Judge the result after a few months, not a few days.
Are varicose vein treatment results permanent?
Veins that have been successfully closed and absorbed generally do not come back. However, new reflux can develop in other veins over time because varicose veins are a chronic condition. Follow-up ultrasound lets new problems be found and treated early.
Will my leg pain go away after treatment?
If pain is caused by venous reflux, it often improves noticeably after the faulty veins are closed. Pain from other causes, such as joints, muscles or nerves, will not change. That is why a thorough ultrasound and history are taken before treatment. See why do varicose veins hurt?
Can I see before-and-after results from LEDAS?
The best guide to your own result is a discussion of your ultrasound findings with the doctor, who will explain what improvement is realistic for your veins and stage. Outcomes differ from person to person, so ask about your specific situation at your consultation.
