What is LEDAS Academy?
LEDAS Academy is the education arm of the Kim Byoung Joon LEDAS Varicose Vein Clinic in Busan. It shares the clinic's approach to varicose vein care with other doctors through hands-on exposure to real clinical practice. The program is built on the LEDAS treatment system : complete ultrasound diagnosis, minimally invasive treatment, and long-term relapse prevention.
Who is the training for?
The Academy is designed for medical professionals who already have clinical experience in, or a strong interest in, varicose vein treatment. It suits doctors who want to:
- Build independent expertise in minimally invasive vein treatment.
- Gain advanced training in EVLT, ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy and sclerotherapy.
- Improve their skills in venous duplex ultrasound diagnosis.
- Learn structured approaches to post-treatment management and recurrence prevention.
What does the curriculum cover?
1. The complete patient pathway
Trainees follow the full journey of a vein patient: consultation, ultrasound examination, treatment procedures and follow-up. Seeing how each step connects is central to the LEDAS approach, because Dr. Kim attributes most recurrences to incomplete diagnosis, the wrong treatment plan or a lack of follow-up.
2. Venous duplex ultrasound
Ultrasound mapping is the foundation of every treatment decision. Trainees observe standing-position scans on Philips EPIQ Elite systems and learn how reflux in trunk, tributary and perforator veins is identified and recorded.
3. Treatment techniques
- EVLT (endovenous laser treatment) with a 1940nm diode laser under local tumescent anesthesia.
- UGFS (ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy) , also called duplex-guided sclerotherapy, for hidden and tortuous veins. See foam sclerotherapy .
- SCT (sclerotherapy) for visible reticular and spider veins.
4. Individual treatment strategy
Trainees learn how to choose and combine methods for each patient, based on ultrasound findings, symptoms and the patient's goals.
5. Follow-up and relapse prevention
The program covers post-treatment care, compression, scheduled follow-up ultrasound and management of recurrence, including the approach used in the clinic's re-operation clinic .
How is the training delivered?
Learning takes place in real clinical practice and combines three formats:
- Theory sessions on venous anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment principles.
- Clinical observation of consultations, ultrasound exams and procedures.
- Case-based learning that works through real cases and treatment decisions.
All clinical care at LEDAS is provided by the clinic's physician with registered nurses, within JCI-accredited safety processes. Patient privacy and consent are respected at all times.
Who teaches at the Academy?
Training is led by Dr. Kim Byoung Joon , a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon who has focused on varicose veins for over 22 years. He is a founding member of the Korean Society for Phlebology and a former adjunct professor at Pusan National University School of Medicine. LEDAS has performed more than 20,000 varicose vein procedures.
