Does Insurance Cover Varicose Vein Treatment?

Quick answer: It depends on your insurer and on whether treatment is medically necessary or cosmetic. At LEDAS, Korean National Health Insurance policyholders may have some costs covered and should check with the international coordinator. Overseas patients should ask their own insurer before travelling. LEDAS issues treatment certificates and other documents in Korean or English.

What decides whether insurance covers varicose veins?

Every insurer has its own rules, but most consider the same basic question: is the treatment medically necessary, or is it cosmetic?

  • Medically necessary: usually means symptoms such as pain, heaviness, swelling, skin changes or ulcers, with an ultrasound showing venous reflux (blood flowing the wrong way).
  • Cosmetic: usually means treating small spider veins only for appearance, without significant symptoms or reflux.

Some insurers also ask whether you have tried conservative care first, such as medical compression stockings , and may require specific wording or measurements in reports. Always check your own policy.

I'm travelling from abroad. Will my insurance pay?

Coverage for treatment abroad varies enormously. Some international health plans include planned treatment overseas; many domestic plans and standard travel insurance policies do not cover planned procedures. Before you book flights:

  1. Contact your insurer and ask whether planned varicose vein treatment in Korea is covered.
  2. Ask whether you need pre-approval, and what it requires.
  3. Ask exactly which documents they need: diagnosis, ultrasound report, itemised invoice, treatment certificate.
  4. Ask whether documents in English are accepted.
  5. Get the answer in writing if possible.

Insurance and varicose veins – frequently asked questions

  • Can LEDAS bill my overseas insurer directly?

Ask the coordinator before treatment. Arrangements depend on your insurer. In many cases, patients pay the clinic and then claim reimbursement with LEDAS documents. Confirm the process with both your insurer and LEDAS before travelling.

  • Do I need an ultrasound report for my insurer?

Often yes, because the report shows whether there is venous reflux, which supports medical necessity. Request the documents you need in advance. LEDAS issues medical statements in Korean or English.

  • Will compression stockings be covered?

That depends on your insurer. Some cover medical compression stockings with a prescription or report; others do not. Ask the coordinator about stocking costs at LEDAS and check your policy.

  • Can I get a quote before I travel?

LEDAS gives an exact quote only after the in-person ultrasound, because treatment depends on what the scan shows. The published averages (180,000 KRW first visit; about 5,500,000 KRW per leg) help you plan. Start with an online consultation.
