Can I Walk After Varicose Vein Treatment?

Quick answer: Yes, and you should. Walking is part of recovery after EVLT and sclerotherapy. At LEDAS you walk soon after treatment while nurses monitor you, and you go home the same day. Walk lightly every day for the next 2–4 weeks, because moving your calf muscles keeps blood flowing and lowers the risk of clots.

Key facts at a glance

  • When: you walk soon after treatment, under nurse monitoring.
  • Where: LEDAS has a dedicated walking route, "LEDAS Road", for use after treatment.
  • How long: light walking daily for 2–4 weeks.
  • Why: the calf muscle pump pushes blood up the deep veins and helps prevent clots.
  • Also helpful: gentle ankle exercises and compression stockings.
  • Avoid at first: long periods standing still, heavy exercise, saunas and hot baths.

Why is walking so important after vein treatment?

Your calf muscles work like a pump. Each time you take a step, they squeeze the deep veins and push blood back up towards the heart. After EVLT or sclerotherapy closes the faulty surface veins, blood is redirected into the healthy deep veins. Walking keeps that blood moving, which:

  • lowers the risk of a clot forming in the deep veins;
  • reduces swelling and the pulling feeling along the treated vein;
  • helps treated veins close and be absorbed.

When do I start walking after treatment at LEDAS?

Straight away. Because LEDAS uses local anesthesia only, with no general or spinal anesthesia, your legs are not numb in a way that stops you standing. After the procedure:

  1. Compression stockings are fitted, and you are shown how to put them on.
  2. You walk with staff while your condition is monitored. Inside the clinic there is a walking route, "LEDAS Road", for this purpose.
  3. Once the team is happy, you are discharged the same day and can walk out of the clinic.

How much should I walk in the first weeks?

The first day

Take short, gentle walks of a few minutes several times. Getting home, walking to a nearby shop or around your hotel is enough.

The first two to four weeks

Walk lightly every day at a comfortable, moderate pace. Many short walks are better than one long, tiring one. Between walks, sit with your legs raised and do ankle pumps (point and flex your feet) every so often.

Afterwards

Is it normal for walking to feel tight or sore?

Yes. After EVLT, a pulling or tight feeling along the inner thigh or calf for 1–2 weeks is common, a bit like a stretched muscle. Walking usually eases it. After sclerotherapy, treated veins may feel firm and look darker for a while as they heal. These are normal parts of recovery. See is varicose vein treatment painful .

What should I avoid?

  • Standing still or sitting without moving for long periods.
  • Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and high-impact sport in the early weeks.
  • Saunas, hot baths and very hot showers, which widen veins.
  • Crossing your legs for long periods.

Full guidance is in the aftercare instructions .

What if I'm travelling home by plane or train?

Stand up and walk around regularly, do ankle exercises in your seat, drink water and wear your stockings. Ask the doctor when it is suitable for you to fly. Read flying after vein treatment .

Get urgent help if walking becomes much more painful, your calf becomes swollen, hot and tender, or you feel suddenly breathless or have chest pain.

Walking after treatment – frequently asked questions

  • Will I need crutches or a wheelchair after EVLT?

No. EVLT at LEDAS is done under local anesthesia without incisions, so you can stand and walk on your own soon after the procedure. Staff walk with you at first to check you feel well before discharge.

  • Can I go sightseeing the day after treatment?

Gentle sightseeing with plenty of walking is fine for most people. Avoid steep hikes, standing still in long queues and hot springs or saunas. Rest with your legs raised between outings. See wellness tourism in Busan for ideas.

  • How far should I walk each day?

There is no fixed distance. Aim for several short walks spread through the day at a comfortable pace, increasing gradually. Stop if walking causes sharp or worsening pain, and contact the clinic.

  • Do I walk with compression stockings on?

Yes. Wear them as instructed, especially while walking and during the day. They support the treated veins and help them close. You will be shown how to put them on before you leave. Read choosing and wearing compression stockings.
