How much does a vein ultrasound cost in Korea?

At LEDAS, the first visit costs 180,000 KRW . That single fee covers two things: a consultation with the specialist and a duplex ultrasound of the veins in your legs. Other Korean clinics and hospitals set their own fees, and some charge the consultation and the scan separately, so check what is included when you compare.

If you are enrolled in Korean National Health Insurance, ask the International Coordinator whether any part of your visit is covered.

What is a duplex ultrasound, and why is it needed?

A duplex ultrasound combines two kinds of image. One shows the shape and size of the vein. The other, Doppler, shows which way the blood is flowing and how fast. Together they reveal venous reflux : blood falling backward down the leg because the valves inside the vein no longer close properly.

Reflux is the hidden engine behind most varicose veins. You cannot see it from the outside, and some people with severe reflux have few visible veins. Without mapping it, treatment risks closing the wrong vein or missing one, which is a common reason varicose veins come back. Read more on venous reflux testing .

What happens during the first visit?

  1. Registration and history. You share your symptoms, how long you have had them, earlier treatments, medicines and family history. Bring any previous reports.
  2. Preliminary explanation. Before the scan, the team shows you how to read the ultrasound monitor so you can follow along.
  3. Standing ultrasound. You stand on a purpose-built examination table. Standing lets gravity reveal reflux clearly. The doctor checks the deep veins, the great and small saphenous veins, and perforator veins.
  4. Real-time results. The scan takes about 15–20 minutes. The doctor explains what you see on the 24-inch monitor while scanning.
  5. Plan and quote. If treatment is recommended, the doctor explains which methods suit your veins and you receive an exact quote.

Who performs the scan at LEDAS?

Accurate diagnosis depends on both equipment and experience. At LEDAS the examination is led by Dr. Kim Byoung Joon , a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon who has focused on varicose veins for over 22 years. The clinic uses Philips EPIQ Elite premium vascular ultrasound, with four units in total. Learn about the EPIQ Elite ultrasound .

How should I prepare for my first visit?

  • Wear loose clothing such as shorts or a skirt, or something easy to change out of. The changing rooms have sinks for washing feet and shoe sterilizers.
  • Skip lotion on your legs on the day so the ultrasound gel works well.
  • Bring a list of medicines , especially blood thinners, and any earlier vein reports or scans.
  • Allow time. The scan itself is short, but registration, discussion and questions take longer.
  • Overseas patients can send information in advance through an online consultation so the visit can be planned around your trip.

What if the scan shows I don't need treatment?

That is a useful result. Some people have spider veins only, or symptoms caused by something other than vein reflux. The doctor will explain what the scan shows and may suggest lifestyle steps or compression stockings , or advise a check-up later. You are under no obligation to book treatment after the first visit.

First visit fee – frequently asked questions

  • Does the 180,000 KRW fee include the ultrasound?

Yes. At LEDAS the first-visit fee covers both the specialist consultation and the duplex ultrasound of your leg veins. You do not pay a separate scan fee on that visit. Ask your coordinator if you also want other tests, such as a check related to another health condition.

  • Is the vein ultrasound painful?

No. It is non-invasive: the doctor moves a probe with gel over your skin. There are no needles, contrast dye or radiation. You may feel light pressure, and standing for the exam can feel tiring if your legs ache, but you can tell the doctor if you need a pause.

  • Can I have the scan and treatment on the same trip?

Usually yes, and overseas patients often plan it that way. The scan comes first; treatment is planned once the results are known. Send your details in advance so the team can suggest a schedule. See how many days you need in Korea.

  • Can I use an ultrasound done in my own country?

Earlier reports are helpful and you should bring them, but LEDAS performs its own standing duplex ultrasound before treatment. Treatment decisions depend on detailed, current mapping of every leaking vein, including small perforators, and veins can change over time.
