When Can I Exercise Again After EVLT?
Quick answer: You can walk on the day of EVLT and should keep walking daily. For the first 2–4 weeks, stick to light activity and avoid strenuous workouts, heavy lifting, saunas and hot baths. After that, most people gradually return to running, gym training and sport, guided by how their legs feel and their follow-up check.
Key facts at a glance
- Same day: walking is encouraged straight after treatment.
- Weeks 1–4: light walking and gentle ankle exercises; avoid strenuous exercise.
- Avoid early: heavy weights, high-impact sport, hot yoga, saunas and hot baths.
- Return to full exercise: gradual, once discomfort settles and your doctor agrees.
- Stockings: wear as instructed during recovery.
- Long term: regular calf exercise supports vein health.
Why is there a break from hard exercise after EVLT?
EVLT seals the faulty vein from the inside. Over the following weeks, the closed vein shrinks and is gradually absorbed by the body. Intense exercise, especially heavy lifting or straining, raises pressure in the leg veins and can increase bruising, swelling and discomfort while this healing happens. Heat from saunas or hot baths widens veins, which works against the healing process. Light walking, on the other hand, helps.
What exercise can I do in the first weeks?
Recommended
- Walking at a moderate pace, several times a day
- Ankle pumps and circles while sitting
- Gentle stretching that does not strain the treated leg
Best avoided for now
- Running, jumping and high-impact classes
- Heavy weightlifting, squats and leg presses
- Hot yoga, saunas and hot baths
- Activities that involve long periods standing still
LEDAS advises walking lightly for 2–4 weeks after treatment. See can I walk after treatment .
When can I go back to specific activities?
Everyone heals differently, and timing depends on how much was treated. Use this as a general guide and confirm with your doctor:
- Office work and daily errands: usually within a day or two.
- Brisk walking, easy cycling: gradually during the first weeks if comfortable.
- Running, gym and sport: usually after the light-activity period, starting gently and building up.
- Swimming: once any needle sites have healed and your doctor agrees.
- Saunas and hot baths: wait until healing is well underway; ask at your check-up.
How do I know I'm ready?
- The pulling or tight feeling along the vein has mostly eased.
- Swelling and bruising have settled.
- Walking for longer feels comfortable.
- Your follow-up ultrasound or doctor's review is satisfactory.
When you restart, begin at about half your usual intensity and increase over a week or two. Stop if you feel sharp pain.
Does exercise help prevent varicose veins coming back?
Regular exercise that works the calf muscles, such as walking, cycling and swimming, supports healthy circulation and is one of the best long-term habits for vein health. Weight training is fine for most people once healed; breathe steadily and avoid holding your breath while straining. Ideas are on exercises for healthy leg veins and sports, running and your veins . Keep up your follow-up ultrasound every 1–2 years, because varicose veins can come back .
Stop and seek urgent care if exercise brings on calf pain with swelling and warmth, or if you become suddenly breathless or have chest pain.

Exercise after EVLT – frequently asked questions
Can I go to the gym the week after EVLT?
Light activity such as walking on a treadmill at an easy pace is usually fine. Avoid heavy leg exercises, running and anything that makes you strain during the first 2–4 weeks. Build up gradually after that, and ask your doctor if unsure.
Is it bad to rest completely after vein treatment?
Yes, complete bed rest is not recommended. Lying or sitting still for long periods lets blood slow down in the deep veins and can raise the clot risk. Short, frequent walks are the best way to recover.
Can exercise reopen a treated vein?
Normal exercise after healing does not reopen a properly closed vein. Early hard exercise mainly increases bruising and discomfort. Long-term regular exercise is good for your veins and overall circulation.
I play golf or tennis. When can I return?
Many people return to these sports after the initial light-activity period, starting with shorter sessions. Wear your stockings if advised, keep hydrated and stop if you feel sharp leg pain. Confirm timing at your follow-up. See the recovery timeline.
