Can Varicose Veins Go Away on Their Own?

Quick answer: No. Varicose veins are a chronic, progressive disease caused by damaged vein valves, and damaged valves do not repair themselves. Exercise, leg raising and compression stockings can ease symptoms and slow progression. One exception: veins that appear during pregnancy often improve after birth, though they may not disappear completely.

Key facts at a glance

  • Do they go away? No; they are chronic and progressive.
  • Why: failed valves and stretched vein walls do not recover.
  • What helps symptoms: daily walking, raising the legs, compression stockings, avoiding heat.
  • Pregnancy: veins that appear in pregnancy often improve after delivery.
  • What removes the faulty vein: treatment such as EVLT or sclerotherapy.
  • Next step: duplex ultrasound to find which veins leak.

Why don't varicose veins go away by themselves?

Healthy leg veins have one-way valves that keep blood moving up towards the heart. In varicose veins, these valves no longer close properly. Blood leaks backwards (reflux), the pressure inside the vein rises, and the wall stretches and deforms. Once a vein has stretched and its valves have failed, the body cannot restore them. That is why varicose veins are described as a chronic, progressive disease.

Over time, the extra pressure tends to spread to nearby veins. Without treatment, many people move gradually from visible veins to swelling, skin changes and, in some cases, ulcers. Read are varicose veins dangerous .

Why do my veins sometimes look better?

Varicose veins can look and feel different from day to day. They often seem smaller in the morning, in cool weather, or after you have rested with your legs raised, and larger after a long day standing, in hot weather or after a sauna. This is because the amount of blood pooling in them changes, not because the disease is healing.

Can lifestyle changes make varicose veins disappear?

Lifestyle changes cannot close a leaking vein, but they genuinely help. They can ease symptoms, slow progression and support results after treatment.

Habits that help

  • Walking at a moderate pace every day
  • Raising your legs above heart level when resting
  • Bathing in the evening rather than the morning
  • Keeping to a healthy weight

Habits that make things worse

  • Staying in one position for a long time
  • High-calorie, salty food
  • Saunas, hot baths and strong heat
  • Smoking and heavy alcohol use

Do compression stockings make them go away?

No. Medical compression stockings apply graduated pressure that supports circulation and relieves heaviness and swelling. They are a conservative treatment that can slow progression, but they do not repair valves. See do compression stockings cure varicose veins .

What about varicose veins in pregnancy?

Pregnancy hormones relax vein walls and blood volume increases, so new varicose veins are common. Many improve within months after delivery, though some remain, especially after several pregnancies. Treatment is usually postponed until after birth. Read can I get treatment while pregnant .

What actually removes a varicose vein?

Treatment closes or removes the faulty vein so blood takes healthy routes instead. At LEDAS this is done with EVLT for the main leaking vein and sclerotherapy for smaller veins, under local anesthesia and without incisions. Not everyone needs treatment straight away. A duplex ultrasound shows how much reflux you have, so you can decide with the doctor whether to treat now or monitor.

Seek urgent care if a leg becomes suddenly swollen, hot and painful, or if you feel sudden breathlessness or chest pain.

What each approach can and can't do

Approach Eases symptoms? Closes the leaking vein?
Waiting and watching No No
Walking, leg raising, avoiding heat Yes No
Medical compression stockings Yes No
EVLT (laser) Yes Yes, main saphenous veins
Sclerotherapy (DGS / SCT) Yes Yes, branch and small veins

Do varicose veins go away – frequently asked questions

  • Can losing weight get rid of varicose veins?

Losing excess weight reduces pressure on leg veins and can ease symptoms, but it does not repair failed valves. Weight loss is still worthwhile because it helps slow progression and supports treatment results. Read weight and varicose veins.

  • Are there creams or supplements that remove varicose veins?

No cream or supplement can close a leaking vein or restore its valves. Some products may soothe dry, itchy skin, but they do not treat the cause. Be cautious of products that promise to make veins vanish.

  • Is it safe to leave varicose veins untreated?

For some people with mild veins and few symptoms, monitoring is reasonable. But the disease tends to progress, so have an ultrasound and keep an eye on changes such as swelling or skin darkening. See when to see a vein doctor.

  • Will my varicose veins disappear after pregnancy?

Often they improve within months after birth, as hormone levels and blood volume return to normal. Some remain, particularly after several pregnancies. If veins are still troublesome a few months after delivery, an ultrasound can show whether treatment would help.
