Do Compression Stockings Cure Varicose Veins?

Quick answer: No. Medical compression stockings do not cure varicose veins, because they cannot repair failed vein valves or close a leaking vein. They are a useful conservative treatment: they relieve heaviness and swelling, slow progression, help prevent clots on long journeys and support healing after EVLT or sclerotherapy.

Key facts at a glance

  • What they are: medical devices that apply graduated pressure, tightest at the ankle.
  • Not a cure: they do not close leaking veins or restore valves.
  • What they do: relieve symptoms, slow progression and support circulation.
  • Long flights: help reduce the risk of DVT ("economy class syndrome").
  • After treatment: help treated veins narrow and be absorbed.
  • Good for: pregnant women and people who cannot have timely treatment.

What do medical compression stockings actually do?

Medical compression stockings are not the same as fashion or "slimming" tights. They apply graduated compression : the pressure is strongest at the ankle and gradually decreases up the leg. This gentle squeeze narrows the surface veins and helps the calf muscles push blood back towards the heart.

As a result, many people notice:

  • less heaviness and aching by the end of the day;
  • less ankle swelling;
  • fewer night cramps;
  • slower progression of skin changes.

Why can't stockings cure varicose veins?

Varicose veins are caused by valves inside the veins that no longer close properly. Blood falls back down the leg (reflux), and the vein stretches. Stockings press on the vein from the outside, which helps while you wear them, but they do not change the damaged valve. When you take them off, the reflux is still there. That is why LEDAS describes compression stockings as a supportive, conservative treatment rather than a main treatment.

To close a leaking vein, it must be treated directly, for example with EVLT or ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy . See compression stockings vs treatment .

When are compression stockings the right choice?

While you are deciding or waiting

If you have symptoms but are not ready for treatment, stockings can make daily life more comfortable and slow progression.

During pregnancy

Vein procedures are usually postponed in pregnancy, and stockings are one of the main ways to ease symptoms. See treatment while pregnant .

On long journeys

Sitting still for hours on a plane slows blood flow in the legs. Stockings help reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Read long-haul flights and DVT prevention .

When treatment isn't possible

For people who cannot have timely treatment because of health or other reasons, stockings are an important long-term support.

Why do I wear stockings after treatment at LEDAS?

After EVLT or sclerotherapy, stockings are an important part of recovery. They:

  1. improve circulation in the leg;
  2. help treated veins narrow and close;
  3. support absorption of the treated vein;
  4. can reduce bruising and discomfort.

Before you leave the clinic, nurses fit your stockings and show you how to put them on and take them off. Follow the instructions you are given on how long to wear them. See aftercare instructions .

How do I choose and wear them correctly?

Stockings work only if they fit. Measurements are taken at the ankle and calf, and sometimes the thigh. Put them on in the morning before swelling builds up. Smooth out wrinkles and do not roll the top down, because a tight band can restrict blood flow. Replace them when they lose elasticity. Full guidance is on choosing and wearing compression stockings .

Ask a doctor before using compression if you have known artery disease, numbness in your feet, or skin problems on your legs. Seek urgent care for a suddenly swollen, painful leg or breathlessness, even if you are wearing stockings.

Compression stockings – frequently asked questions

  • If my symptoms improve with stockings, do I still need treatment?

    Not always straight away. If stockings keep you comfortable and the ultrasound shows mild disease, monitoring may be reasonable. But the underlying reflux remains and usually progresses, so keep having check-ups and discuss treatment if symptoms or skin changes increase.

  • Are shop-bought support tights the same as medical stockings?

    No. Medical compression stockings are designed with graduated pressure, strongest at the ankle, and are fitted to your measurements. Ordinary support or fashion tights usually do not provide the same controlled pressure. Ask a professional to measure you.

  • Should I sleep in compression stockings?

    Usually not, unless your doctor specifically tells you to, for example in the first period after treatment. Stockings work mainly when you are upright and gravity pulls blood down. Follow the instructions given at discharge.

  • Can compression stockings prevent varicose veins?

    They can help reduce blood pooling and may slow the development of varicose veins in people at risk, such as those who stand all day. They do not guarantee prevention. Combine them with walking and leg raising. See how to prevent varicose veins.
